Slaanesh: The Dark Prince — Complete Warhammer Guide

Slaanesh is the Chaos God of excess, pleasure, pain, perfection, and obsession. Known as the Dark Prince, the Prince of Pleasure, and She Who Thirsts (to the Aeldari), Slaanesh is the youngest of the Chaos Gods — and the most insidious. Where Khorne is obvious in his demands and Nurgle is patient in his corruption, Slaanesh is seductive. Every sensation, every desire, every pursuit of perfection is a thread that Slaanesh can pull.
Slaanesh is not simply the "god of pleasure." That's the surface reading. Slaanesh is the god of excess — anything taken to its extreme. The artist who destroys their health pursuing the perfect painting. The warrior who becomes addicted to the thrill of the kill. The musician who needs louder, faster, more. The scholar who can't stop reading, the lover who can't stop wanting, the hedonist who has exhausted every pleasure and needs something new. Slaanesh is the endpoint of every obsession.

The Birth of Slaanesh
Slaanesh is the only Chaos God whose birth is documented. In the lore, the Aeldari (Eldar) civilization — the most advanced species in the galaxy — fell into decadence over millions of years. Their pursuit of every sensation, every experience, every pleasure created a growing psychic vortex in the Warp. When the vortex reached critical mass, Slaanesh was born — and the birth scream tore a hole in reality that became the Eye of Terror.
The birth of Slaanesh destroyed the Aeldari empire overnight. Billions of Aeldari souls were devoured. Their gods were killed or enslaved. Only the Craftworld Aeldari (who fled) and the Drukhari (who hid in the Webway) survived. To this day, when an Aeldari dies without protection, their soul is consumed by Slaanesh. This is why the Aeldari call Slaanesh "She Who Thirsts" — an ever-present predator waiting for every one of them.
The Palace of Pleasure
Slaanesh's domain in the Warp is the Palace of Pleasure — six concentric circles, each representing a different temptation. Any mortal or daemon who enters must pass through all six circles to reach Slaanesh at the centre. Each circle is designed to trap the traveler by offering their deepest desire:
| Circle | Temptation | Trap |
|---|---|---|
| First | Avidity (greed) | Mountains of treasure that grow heavier the more you carry |
| Second | Gluttony | Infinite feasts that leave you emptier with each bite |
| Third | Carnality | Every physical pleasure imaginable — none satisfy |
| Fourth | Paramountcy (pride) | Visions of absolute power that dissolve when grasped |
| Fifth | Vainglory | Mirrors reflecting your perfected self — that you can never become |
| Sixth | Indolence | Perfect peace and rest — so perfect you never want to leave |
Almost no one reaches the centre. Those who do find Slaanesh — who appears differently to every viewer, always as the most beautiful and terrible thing they can imagine.
Slaanesh's Daemons
| Daemon | Role | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Keepers of Secrets | Greater Daemon | Towering, elegant daemons of terrifying beauty. Four-armed, fast, and devastatingly lethal. They speak with voices that can charm gods and shatter minds. The most dangerous in single combat of any Greater Daemon. |
| Daemonettes | Lesser Daemon | Lithe, fast, androgynous daemons with crab-like claws. They're seductive and horrifying in equal measure. Their touch brings ecstasy so intense it's indistinguishable from agony. |
| Fiends | Daemon Beast | Six-legged beasts that emit a musk causing euphoria and paralysis. Faster than almost any other daemon. They hunt in packs, running down prey that's too blissed out to flee. |
| Seekers | Cavalry | Daemonettes mounted on Steeds of Slaanesh — serpentine creatures of terrifying speed. The fastest cavalry in the Warhammer universe. |
| The Masque | Named Herald | A cursed Daemonette forced to dance for eternity. Her dance compels all who watch to join — and they dance until they die of exhaustion. Cursed by Slaanesh for daring to entertain the Dark Prince too well. |
Mortal Followers of Slaanesh
In Warhammer 40,000
The Emperor's Children are the traitor Space Marine legion of Slaanesh. Their Primarch, Fulgrim, was obsessed with perfection — in art, in warfare, in everything. A daemonic sword slowly corrupted him, and the legion followed. The Emperor's Children went from the most disciplined and cultured legion to the most depraved in the span of a single heresy.
Their fall is the most tragic in the Horus Heresy. They didn't start as monsters — they started as artists and perfectionists. The corruption came from within their own virtues, taken to excess. That's pure Slaanesh.
On the tabletop, Emperor's Children specialise in speed, sonic weapons (Noise Marines use weaponised sound), and overwhelming combat stimulation. Noise Marines are Space Marines who have modified their armour to produce sonic attacks so intense they liquefy flesh — and they experience every kill as euphoria.
In Warhammer Fantasy
Slaanesh's followers in the Old World are the most hidden of all Chaos cultists. They infiltrate the aristocracy, the arts, and the pleasure houses. A Slaanesh cult might begin as a perfectly legitimate salon or gentlemen's club before gradually escalating into something darker. By the time the excesses become dangerous, the members are too deep to stop.
Slaanesh and the Aeldari
The relationship between Slaanesh and the Aeldari is the most personal god-mortal dynamic in Warhammer. Slaanesh hungers for Aeldari souls specifically — they're the ones who created the Dark Prince, and their psychically potent souls are Slaanesh's favourite meal. Every Craftworld Aeldari carries a Spirit Stone that captures their soul at death to prevent Slaanesh from consuming it. The Drukhari avoid Slaanesh's hunger by feeding on the suffering of others — substituting others' pain for their own souls.
In Age of Sigmar, the Aeldari gods captured Slaanesh — trapping the Dark Prince and extracting the consumed Aeldari souls. This is one of the biggest lore events in Warhammer history and has ongoing consequences.
Slaanesh FAQ
Is Slaanesh just about sex?
No. This is the biggest misconception. Slaanesh is about excess in all forms. A craftsman who destroys their hands pursuing perfection serves Slaanesh. A musician who plays until they bleed serves Slaanesh. A warrior addicted to the adrenaline of combat serves Slaanesh. Carnality is one domain among many — and not the most important one.
Is Slaanesh male or female?
Neither. Both. Slaanesh is referred to with all pronouns across different sources. The Dark Prince appears as whatever the viewer finds most captivating — which varies by individual. In game terms, Slaanesh is consistently presented as androgynous. The "Prince/Princess" title is used interchangeably.
Is Slaanesh the weakest Chaos God?
Slaanesh is the youngest and sometimes portrayed as the least powerful in direct conflict. However, Slaanesh's subtlety makes direct comparison meaningless — the Dark Prince doesn't fight wars the way Khorne does. Slaanesh corrupts from within, turning enemies into followers. In Age of Sigmar, Slaanesh was powerful enough to consume an entire pantheon of gods before being trapped.
What is Noise Marine music like?
The official lore describes it as sound weaponised beyond human comprehension — frequencies that rupture organs, vibrations that shatter bone, harmonics that overload the nervous system. The Noise Marines experience this as the most sublime music ever created. Everyone else experiences it as death. Several Warhammer novels describe it as paradoxically beautiful and lethal.
