How to Choose a D&D Character Name
The best D&D names follow the phonetic patterns of their race's language. Elvish names flow with soft consonants and long vowels. Dwarven names hit hard with guttural stops and short syllables. Human names vary as widely as human cultures — which is why they're the most flexible to name.
Tips for Naming Your Character
- Say it out loud — If you can't pronounce it confidently, your DM and fellow players will struggle too. Simplicity beats complexity.
- Make it distinct — Avoid names that sound like other characters at the table. If there's already a "Kael," don't name yours "Kale."
- Consider nicknames — A long, elaborate name is fine if it has a usable short form. "Thaliondriel" becomes "Thal" at the table.
- Match the tone — A grim dark campaign and a comedic one-shot call for different naming energy.
Names by Character Class
| Class | Name Style | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Fighter/Barbarian | Strong, direct, often short | Kord, Brenna, Thokk, Hilda |
| Wizard/Sorcerer | Arcane, unusual, sometimes pretentious | Mordecai, Seraphina, Varis, Elowynn |
| Rogue | Sharp, quick, sometimes aliases | Jinx, Wren, Corvina, Ash |
| Cleric/Paladin | Noble, resonant, sometimes religious | Aldric, Helena, Gareth, Isolde |
| Ranger/Druid | Nature-inspired, earthy | Rowan, Ivy, Thorn, Brook |
