Generate sturdy dwarven names for D&D, Pathfinder, and fantasy worlds. Hard consonants, clan pride, and mountain heritage.

Dwarven names are built like dwarven architecture: solid, sturdy, and unapologetic. Short syllables, hard consonants, and a sense of weight that suggests stone and steel. These names belong to characters who mine deep, fight hard, and hold grudges for centuries.

Dwarven Naming Traditions

In most fantasy settings, dwarven names carry cultural weight. They're not just labels — they're statements of lineage, craft, and honor. Understanding dwarven naming conventions helps you create names that feel dwarven even when they're invented.

  • Clan names matter more than personal names — A dwarf introduces themselves as "Thorin, son of Thrain, of the house of Durin" because ancestry defines identity. Consider giving your dwarf a clan name even if the game doesn't require it.
  • Names reference craft or heritage — Surnames like Ironforge, Stonehelm, Goldvein, and Brightaxe tell you what the family is known for.
  • Phonetics are guttural and Germanic — Hard k, th, g, and d sounds dominate. Vowels are short and punchy. Compare "Gimli" (dwarf) to "Galadriel" (elf) — the rhythm is completely different.
  • Ancestral names are recycled — Dwarves often name children after revered ancestors, creating generational name chains (Durin I through Durin VII in Tolkien's works).
