Ultramarines Name Generator
Latinate names in the Macragge tradition, with ranks and honours, for the Ultramarines and their successors.
Found your Captain? Give the whole Chapter a wiki — companies, honours, battle history.
The Ultramarines sound like the Roman Republic given power armour, and that is no accident: Macragge's culture is Ultramar's culture, senatorial and Latinate, and the Chapter's names follow it. Given names like Cassian, Titus and Aurelian; war-names like Valerion, Sicarus and Tarentus; honours that read like inscriptions on a triumphal arch. This generator produces names in exactly that register.
It covers the Ultramarines themselves and eight of their successor Chapters — Genesis Chapter, Novamarines, Aurora Chapter, Doom Eagles, Praetors of Orpheus, Silver Skulls and Howling Griffons — each with its own honours. Choose a rank, choose how many, and click any name to copy it. For other founding Chapters, use the general Space Marine Name Generator.
The Macragge Naming Tradition
Ultramarines names have three parts, and the generator builds all three:
- Given name. Classical and Latin-derived: Cassian, Decimus, Marcellus, Octavian, Lucian. Ordinal names (Primus, Quintus, Sextus) are common — Macragge's old families still count their sons.
- War-name. Usually a family or gens name in the Roman style, ending in -us, -ion, -an or -ius: Valerion, Aurelius, Praxor, Talassar. Some Marines take the name of their homeworld or city instead.
- Honour. Company postings ("of the 2nd Company"), places held ("Warden of Macragge", "Honoured of Calth") and offices ("Bearer of the Company Banner"). These are earned, and other Marines use them.
| Rank | Role | How often it should appear |
|---|---|---|
| Battle-Brother | Line Marine of a battle company | Most of any roster |
| Brother-Sergeant / Veteran Sergeant | Squad leader | One per squad |
| Lieutenant | Commands a demi-company | Two per company |
| Captain | Commands a company | Ten in the Chapter |
| Chaplain, Librarian, Apothecary, Techmarine | Specialists attached to companies | A handful each |
| Chapter Master | Lord of Macragge | One |
Successor Chapters
The Ultramarines have more successors than any other First Founding Legion, and most keep the Latinate style while adding their own honours. The generator's successor list gives each its own flavour: the Doom Eagles' mourning honours, the Silver Skulls' omen-reading Prognosticators, the Novamarines' quartered heraldry. If you are building a homebrew Ultramarines successor, generate a dozen names from a neighbouring successor and adjust the honours to your Chapter's history — the naming bones will already be right. Our Adeptus Astartes lore guide covers Foundings and successor lineages in depth.
Tips for Better Ultramarines Characters
- Match the honour to the company. A 1st Company veteran carries heavier honours than a 10th Company Scout sergeant. Regenerate until the weight feels right.
- Use the ordinal names. A "Quintus" or "Sextus" implies brothers who came before — a family with a history in the Chapter's recruiting worlds.
- Keep the Codex in mind. Ultramarines are the Codex Chapter. A Captain's name should sound like it belongs on a formal muster roll, not a war-cry.
Fighting the other side of the Heresy? The Chaos Space Marine Name Generator builds the Word Bearers, Black Legion and their kin — the Ultramarines' oldest enemies.
A name is one line of a Chapter's history. Write the rest.
Anima gives your Chapter or warband a wiki of its own: every Captain, company and campaign linked together, a timeline of the Chapter's wars, and a live screen for the sessions you run in the 41st Millennium.
- Character entries for every Astartes, with rank, company, honours and relationships
- Factions and locations wired together — Chapter, homeworld, enemies, allies
- A timeline of founding, crusades and betrayals your players can explore
