Every Space Marine name carries a Chapter's whole culture in two or three words. An Ultramarine sounds like a Roman senator. A Space Wolf sounds like a saga. A Raven Guard sounds like something you wouldn't hear coming. This generator builds names the way each Chapter would: pick a Chapter, pick a rank, and it assembles a given name, a war-name and, sometimes, a battle honour in that Chapter's own tradition.
Ten Chapters are covered — Ultramarines, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Imperial Fists, Salamanders, Raven Guard, Iron Hands, White Scars, Black Templars and Grey Knights — with ranks from Battle-Brother up to Chapter Master. How Space Marine Names Work
The Adeptus Astartes do not share one naming culture. Each Chapter recruits from its own homeworld and keeps that world's language alive in its ranks, so a name tells you where a Marine was born as much as who he is. The generator leans on those traditions:

Ranks follow Codex structure. Most Marines you generate will be Battle-Brothers or Sergeants because that is what a company is mostly made of; Captains, Chaplains, Librarians and the Chapter Master come up rarely unless you ask for them. Using the Generator for Your Army
- Name a whole squad. Set the Chapter, set the rank to Battle-Brother, set the count to ten, then generate once more with Brother-Sergeant for the squad leader.
- Build a command roster. Generate a Captain, a Lieutenant, a Chaplain and an Apothecary for each company, and note the honours the tool gives them — they make instant lore hooks.
- Kill Team and Crusade. Copy all, paste into your roster, and you have named operatives ready for the campaign log.
- Homebrew Chapters. Pick the founding Chapter your homebrew descends from: an Ultramarines successor should sound Latinate, a Blood Angels successor Italianate. The Ultramarines Name Generator goes deeper on the Primogenitors and their successors.
Writing Battle Honours
An honour is the difference between a name on a list and a character. "Captain Severus Tarentus" is fine. "Captain Severus Tarentus, Victor of the Tarentus Gate" tells you he held something, once, and that people still say so. The generator attaches an honour to roughly one name in three; when it does, treat it as the seed of a story. Where was the gate? Who was on the other side? What did it cost?
