Like a name? Save it as a real character.

Every great D&D campaign starts in a tavern — and every great tavern needs a name that sets the mood before a word of description is spoken. "The Prancing Pony" tells you this is a welcoming place. "The Shattered Shield" tells you it has a history. "The Midnight Rose" tells you there are secrets here.
Generate a batch of tavern names below and click any to copy. For naming the characters inside the tavern, try our D&D Name Generator. For designing the tavern itself, our Location Design guide has the Three-Detail Rule and tavern menu worldbuilding technique.

The Anatomy of a Great Tavern Name
Most fantasy tavern names follow the pattern "The [Adjective] [Noun]" — but the best ones subvert expectations within that formula. "The Golden Goose" is expected. "The Gilded Goose" is slightly better. "The Plucked Goose" tells a story.
Name Formulas That Work
| Formula | Examples | Mood |
|---|---|---|
| The [Material] [Animal] | The Iron Stag, The Copper Fox | Sturdy, reliable |
| The [Adjective] [Weapon/Armor] | The Broken Sword, The Rusty Shield | Adventurer-friendly, has history |
| The [Emotion] [Person] | The Laughing Bard, The Weary Traveler | Character-driven, inviting |
| The [Color] [Nature] | The Blue Moon, The Crimson Rose | Atmospheric, mysterious |
| The [Verb-ing] [Creature] | The Dancing Bear, The Howling Wolf | Dynamic, lively |
