Tiefling: Race Guide, Lore & Character Ideas

Tieflings are one of the most popular and visually striking races in Dungeons & Dragons. Descendants of humans who made pacts with devils, they carry infernal heritage in their blood — manifested as horns, tails, solid-colored eyes, and an innate connection to fire and darkness. They're outsiders by default, trusted by few, and that tension is what makes them so compelling to play.
This guide covers everything you need to play a Tiefling in 5th Edition: racial traits, all available subraces, optimal class pairings, and roleplaying strategies that go beyond "edgy loner."
Tiefling Racial Traits (5e)
All Tieflings share these base traits from the Player's Handbook:
| Trait | Details |
|---|---|
| Ability Score Increase | +2 Charisma (base). Subrace provides an additional +1. |
| Age | Mature at the same rate as humans. Lifespan slightly longer (up to ~110 years). |
| Size | Medium. Same height and build range as humans. |
| Speed | 30 feet. |
| Darkvision | 60 feet. See in dim light as bright, darkness as dim (shades of gray). |
| Hellish Resistance | Resistance to fire damage (half damage from all fire sources). |
| Languages | Common and Infernal. |
Fire resistance is quietly one of the best racial features in the game. Fire is the most common elemental damage type in 5e — fireballs, red dragons, fire elementals, lava traps. You shrug off half of all of it, forever, with no resource cost.
All Tiefling Subraces & Bloodlines
The base Tiefling (PHB) descends from Asmodeus. Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes introduced eight additional bloodlines, each tied to a different Archdevil. Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide added variant options.
Bloodline Comparison Table
| Bloodline | Source | +1 Ability | Spells (Innate Casting) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Asmodeus (default) | PHB | +1 INT | Thaumaturgy → Hellish Rebuke → Darkness | Warlocks, Sorcerers, general use |
| Baalzebul | MToF | +1 INT | Thaumaturgy → Ray of Sickness → Crown of Madness | Debuff-focused casters |
| Dispater | MToF | +1 DEX | Thaumaturgy → Disguise Self → Detect Thoughts | Rogues, social infiltrators |
| Fierna | MToF | +1 WIS | Friends → Charm Person → Suggestion | Social manipulation, Bards |
| Glasya | MToF | +1 DEX | Minor Illusion → Disguise Self → Invisibility | Rogues, stealth builds, thieves |
| Levistus | MToF | +1 CON | Ray of Frost → Armor of Agathys → Darkness | Frontline melee, survivability |
| Mammon | MToF | +1 INT | Mage Hand → Tenser's Floating Disk → Arcane Lock | Wizards, utility-focused builds |
| Mephistopheles | MToF | +1 INT | Mage Hand → Burning Hands → Flame Blade | Fire-themed blasters |
| Zariel | MToF | +1 STR | Thaumaturgy → Searing Smite → Branding Smite | Paladins, melee martials |
Standout picks: Glasya for Rogues (free Invisibility at level 5), Zariel for Paladins (smite stacking), Levistus for anyone who wants to survive the front line (Armor of Agathys is exceptional on melee builds).
Best Class Pairings for Tieflings
The +2 CHA makes Tieflings natural fits for Charisma-based casters. But subraces open up surprising martial builds too.
Tier List: Tiefling Class Synergy
| Tier | Classes | Why |
|---|---|---|
| S-Tier | Warlock, Sorcerer, Paladin | +2 CHA is your primary casting stat. Fire resistance stacks with melee Paladin survivability. Zariel Tiefling Paladin is a powerhouse. |
| A-Tier | Bard, Rogue (Glasya/Dispater) | CHA powers Bard casting and social skills. Glasya Rogue gets free Disguise Self + Invisibility — the ultimate infiltrator package. |
| B-Tier | Fighter (Zariel), Cleric (Fierna), Wizard | Zariel gives +1 STR + smite spells. Fierna gives +1 WIS for Cleric casting. Asmodeus gives +1 INT for Wizards. |
| C-Tier | Ranger, Monk, Druid, Barbarian | No subrace boosts WIS/DEX enough to be optimal. Playable, not synergistic. |
Tiefling Lore & Worldbuilding
Origins: The Pact
In the Forgotten Realms, Tieflings trace their lineage to the empire of Bael Turath, where human nobles struck bargains with Asmodeus for power. The pact was binding and hereditary — every descendant carries the mark. This wasn't a choice any living Tiefling made, which is central to their identity: they bear the consequences of someone else's ambition.
Society & Prejudice
Most Tieflings in the Realms face suspicion, fear, or outright hostility. They're frequently mistaken for half-demons or fiends. Some lean into the reputation (it keeps people at a distance). Others spend their lives proving they're more than their bloodline. Neither response is wrong — and the tension between the two is where great roleplaying lives.
Tieflings don't have their own nation or culture in most settings. They grow up in human cities, adopted families, or on the streets. This means their cultural identity comes from where they grew up, not what they are — a detail that many players overlook.
Physical Appearance
Tiefling appearance varies wildly. The Player's Handbook lists:
- Horns — ranging from small nubs to large ram-like or antelope-style horns
- Tail — thick and long, 4-5 feet, non-prehensile (usually)
- Skin color — human tones through reds, purples, and blues
- Eyes — solid colors (no visible pupils), often gold, silver, red, or white
- Teeth — sharp, slightly fanged canines
There is no "standard" Tiefling look. Two Tiefling siblings can look completely different. This is freedom for character design — use it.
Roleplaying a Tiefling: Beyond the Edgy Loner
The "edgy loner Tiefling Warlock" is a meme for a reason — it's the default that new players gravitate toward. It works, but there's so much more design space. Here are five alternative character concepts:
- The Diplomat — A Tiefling who became a diplomat because of the prejudice. They learned to read people, defuse tension, and turn suspicion into trust. Charisma isn't manipulation — it's empathy with intent. (Bard or Warlock of the Archfey)
- The True Believer — A devout Tiefling Cleric or Paladin who worships a god of redemption (Ilmater, Lathander). They see their heritage as a test and their faith as proof they've passed it. (Zariel Paladin or Fierna Cleric)
- The Scholar — An Asmodeus Tiefling Wizard who studies their own infernal bloodline academically. They're not ashamed — they're fascinated. They collect fiendish texts and treat their heritage like a research subject.
- The Con Artist — A Glasya Tiefling Rogue who uses their natural illusion magic and social stigma as tools. People expect deception from Tieflings? Fine — they'll give them exactly what they expect, and take everything they have. (Arcane Trickster)
- The Adopted Noble — Raised by a wealthy human family as a symbol of their progressive values. Educated, privileged, and completely unprepared for how the rest of the world treats Tieflings. The first time they're refused entry to a tavern changes everything.

Tiefling FAQ
Are Tieflings evil?
No. Tieflings have no innate alignment. Their infernal heritage doesn't compel them toward evil — it just means they carry the appearance of it. Many Tieflings are heroic, compassionate, and selfless precisely because they understand what it's like to be judged unfairly.
Can Tieflings have children with other races?
Yes. Tiefling blood is dominant — if one parent is a Tiefling, the child will be a Tiefling. The infernal bloodline always expresses. This can create fascinating family dynamics, especially when a Tiefling is born to two human parents generations after the original pact.
Do Tiefling horns grow back?
Not addressed in official rules. Most DMs rule that horns do not regrow if cut, similar to a human losing a finger. Some Tieflings file or cap their horns to blend in — this is a great roleplaying detail.
What's the difference between a Tiefling and a Cambion?
A Cambion is the direct offspring of a fiend and a humanoid — a half-fiend. A Tiefling is a humanoid who carries diluted fiendish blood from an ancestor's pact. Cambions are significantly more powerful and are usually monsters, not player characters.
Can I play a Tiefling without horns or a tail?
With DM permission, yes. The Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide introduced variant Tieflings with different physical traits. Some Tieflings might pass as human entirely — which opens up interesting roleplaying around hidden identity. Discuss with your DM.
