Yklwa 5e: D&D Weapon Guide (Stats, History, Best Builds)

The yklwa (pronounced ick-l-wah) is a Chultan throwing spear that first appeared in the Tomb of Annihilation hardcover. It looks like a stubby spear: a heavy stone or metal head on a three-to-four-foot shaft, balanced for both melee thrust and short-range throw. Mechanically, it's the only weapon in 5e with its specific damage and range profile, and it sits in an awkward niche between shortsword, spear, and javelin — a niche where it's actually quite good if you know how to build around it.

Most players have never used a yklwa. Most DMs forget it exists. But for a few specific builds — Chultan rangers, dual-wielding skirmishers, and any character with thematic ties to the Mesoamerican-coded jungle regions of Forgotten Realms — the yklwa is the right weapon for the right reason. This guide covers the stats, the build math, the in-world history, and when (if ever) you should choose it over the more familiar options.

Yklwa: The Stats

From Tomb of Annihilation and reprinted in Mordenkainen's Monsters of the Multiverse:

  • Type: Martial Melee Weapon
  • Damage: 1d8 piercing
  • Weight: 3 lb.
  • Properties: Thrown (range 10/30)
  • Cost: 1 gp

That's the entire card. Now let's read what's actually special about it:

  • Martial, not simple. The yklwa requires martial weapon proficiency. Most classes that get it (fighter, paladin, ranger, barbarian, rogue with feat, bard with feat) already have plenty of options.
  • 1d8 piercing. Higher than a shortsword (1d6) or a javelin (1d6) or a spear used one-handed (1d6). Equal to a longsword (1d8) or a battleaxe (1d8) one-handed.
  • Thrown 10/30. Short range. Half the range of a javelin (30/120). Better suited to skirmish than ranged.
  • No versatile property. Can't be used two-handed for extra damage. Unlike a longsword or spear.
  • One-handed. Leaves your off-hand free for a shield or a second yklwa.

When the Yklwa Beats Alternatives

The yklwa is mechanically optimal in three specific build situations:

Dual-Wielding Yklwas

With the Dual Wielder feat (or in 2024 modern rules, two-weapon fighting style with any one-handed weapon), you can dual-wield two yklwas. That's 1d8 + Str / 1d8 (off-hand bonus action attack). Compared to dual-wielding shortswords (1d6 / 1d6), you get an extra average damage of 1 per attack — meaningful over a full combat. And you can throw either weapon in melee for a quick switch to ranged.

Sword-and-Board with Throw Option

One yklwa + shield = AC +2 and 1d8 + Str melee. Then you can throw the yklwa as your main attack (up to 30 feet) when an enemy is out of reach. Most one-handed weapons lack the thrown property; spear and javelin are the obvious alternatives but deal less damage. Yklwa is the strongest combination of "good melee damage + ranged option + free hand for shield."

Skirmish Rangers and Rogues

Gloom Stalker rangers, scout rogues, and any class with mobility benefit from the thrown property. You can throw a yklwa, walk into melee with a spare one, and have a third in your bandolier for switch-hits. The 1d8 damage is enough that you don't feel like you're using a fallback weapon.

When the Yklwa Loses

The yklwa is bad in several situations:

  • Pure ranged builds. Longbow (1d8, range 150/600) or heavy crossbow (1d10, range 100/400) outclass yklwa for any character whose primary attack is ranged. Yklwa's 30-foot range is melee-adjacent at best.
  • Damage-maximizing two-handers. Greatsword (2d6) and greataxe (1d12) deal more damage. Yklwa loses to both for builds focused on raw damage output.
  • Long-range thrown weapon characters. Javelin (1d6, range 30/120) is better than yklwa if you're throwing at long range; yklwa is better at short range.
  • Sorcerer and wizard. Casters don't benefit from martial weapons (they don't have proficiency, and damage cantrips beat weapon attacks). Yklwa is wasted on a primary caster.

Class Synergies

  • Fighter. Action Surge + dual yklwa = 4 attacks at 1d8 damage. Especially strong with Champion's improved crit or Battle Master maneuvers.
  • Ranger (Gloom Stalker, Drakewarden, Horizon Walker). The skirmish-and-throw playstyle fits exotic ranger subclasses. Drakewarden's bonded creature pairs well with mobile yklwa fighters.
  • Paladin. Yklwa + shield + smite. Higher damage than spear + shield, with the throwing option for cleanup or kiting.
  • Rogue (Scout, Assassin). Sneak Attack works on the first attack of your turn; throw a yklwa from concealment for sneak attack at 30 feet.
  • Barbarian. Bear Totem barbarian throwing yklwas at range while raging is a flavorful niche build. Damage isn't optimal but the visual is incredible.
  • Bard. College of Swords bard with Two-Weapon Fighting style can dual-wield yklwas and add Flourishes to attacks.

Yklwa in Tomb of Annihilation

The yklwa originates in Tomb of Annihilation, the 2017 hardcover that takes place in Chult — a Mesoamerica-coded jungle continent. Yklwa-wielders in Chult include:

  • Chultan warriors. Standard troops carry yklwas as part of standard kit. Often paired with a shield (often hide, sometimes lacquered).
  • Tabaxi hunters. Many Chultan tabaxi use yklwas because the short throw range matches their close-quarters hunting style. See our tabaxi race guide for more.
  • Yuan-ti pureblood agents. Use yklwas as ceremonial-but-deadly weapons in their above-ground operations.
  • Lizardfolk hunters. Tribal lizardfolk in Chult favor yklwas alongside javelins and bone knives.

If your campaign is set in or near Chult, yklwa is the period-appropriate weapon. If your campaign is in Faerûn proper, yklwas are exotic imports that mark a character as Chultan, well-traveled, or specialty-trained.

Yklwa Lore: Names & History

The word "yklwa" appears to be invented for D&D rather than derived from a real historical weapon. The closest real-world analogues:

  • African assegai. A short stabbing spear of similar size and weight, famously used by Zulu warriors. Tomb of Annihilation's art clearly references the assegai.
  • Roman pilum. A short throwing spear used in melee. Different shape but similar function.
  • Mesoamerican atlatl dart. Short javelins thrown with a launcher. Yklwa is thrown by hand, but the concept of "short, heavy, dual-purpose throw weapon" is comparable.

Yklwa in Other Settings

Outside of Chult-set campaigns, yklwa can be repurposed:

  • Gladiator weapon. Arena gladiators in Sword Coast cities sometimes use yklwas as crowd-pleasing exotic options. Velvet-wrapped, fluted, sometimes set with gems.
  • Tomb-raid loot. Found in archaeology-themed campaigns. A jeweled yklwa from a fallen empire makes for an evocative magic item base.
  • Cultural significance. In a homebrew setting, yklwa might be the ceremonial weapon of a specific clan or order. Restricted to initiates.
  • Mercenary kit. Veteran mercenaries who served in Chultan campaigns might carry yklwas back to Faerûn as personal weapons.

Magic Yklwa Ideas

The yklwa is a great base weapon for a custom magic item:

  • Yklwa of Return. When thrown, returns to your hand on your next turn (uncommon).
  • Yklwa of the Hunter. +1 to attack and damage; deals 1d8 extra damage to creatures you're tracking (rare).
  • Coral Yklwa. Deals additional 1d4 cold damage; the spearhead is bone-like coral (uncommon).
  • Yklwa of Chultan Kings. +2 weapon; once per day, when thrown, deals additional 4d6 force damage and ignores cover (very rare).
  • Tooth of the Tarrasque. Yklwa made from a tarrasque tooth; +3, ignores resistance to piercing (legendary).

Common Yklwa Mistakes

  • Treating it as a spear. Yklwa is not versatile. Don't try to use it two-handed for extra damage.
  • Throwing at long range. 30 feet is short. Disadvantage applies beyond 10 feet for thrown weapons that aren't ranged-property. Use yklwa in close skirmish or as melee-with-backup-throw.
  • Buying it for a caster. Wizards and sorcerers don't have martial weapon proficiency and don't benefit from yklwa.
  • Forgetting it's exotic. Outside Chult, yklwa is unusual. A character carrying one invites questions and roleplay opportunities — lean into them.
  • Ignoring dual-wield potential. The strongest yklwa build is two of them.

The Yklwa at the Table

The yklwa is a niche weapon for specific builds. If you're playing a Chultan character, a dual-wielding skirmisher, or a sword-and-board fighter who wants a thrown option, it's an upgrade over the alternatives. If you're playing a ranged sniper or a two-handed damage dealer, it's not for you.
