Khorne: The Blood God — Complete Warhammer Guide

"Blood for the Blood God! Skulls for the Skull Throne!" — the most iconic war cry in all of Warhammer. Khorne is the Chaos God of war, rage, murder, and martial honour. He sits upon the Skull Throne — a mountain of skulls harvested from the mightiest warriors slain across every battlefield in existence — and demands one thing: blood. It doesn't matter whose blood. It doesn't even matter if it's the blood of his own followers. Every act of violence feeds Khorne.

But Khorne is not simply a god of senseless slaughter. He is also the god of martial honour, courage, and strength. He respects worthy opponents. He despises cowardice, treachery, and sorcery. A warrior who fights honourably and dies well earns Khorne's respect — even if that warrior opposed him. This duality makes Khorne one of the most compelling Chaos Gods: he's the patron of both the berserker and the honourable warrior, the murderer and the soldier.

The Skull Throne & The Brass Citadel

Khorne's domain in the Warp is a world of eternal warfare. The Brass Citadel is a fortress of impossible scale, built from brass and bone, surrounded by plains of skulls and rivers of boiling blood. At its heart sits the Skull Throne — every skull taken in Khorne's name is added to it. The throne grows eternally.

Around the Citadel, Khorne's daemonic legions wage endless wars against each other and against the daemons of rival gods who stray too close. There is no peace in Khorne's realm. There is no rest. There is only the next battle.

Mortal Followers of Khorne

In Warhammer 40,000

The World Eaters are the traitor Space Marine legion dedicated to Khorne. Their Primarch, Angron, was a gladiator-slave implanted with the Butcher's Nails — cybernetic implants that amplify rage and suppress all other emotions. When Khorne claimed him, the Nails' influence spread to the entire legion. The World Eaters are barely controlled berserkers who charge into melee at every opportunity.

Khorne Berserkers are the iconic unit: Space Marines so consumed by rage that they've abandoned all ranged weapons and fight exclusively in close combat with chainaxes and chainswords. They are among the most feared melee units in the galaxy.

In Warhammer Fantasy / The Old World

In the Old World, Khorne's followers are primarily Chaos Warriors of Khorne — Norse and Kurgan tribesmen who've pledged their skulls to the Blood God. They seek worthy opponents and honourable combat, but their definition of "honourable" involves a lot of bloodshed. Skullcrushers — Chaos Knights mounted on Juggernauts — are the most devastating cavalry in the setting.

Khorne's Code

Khorne has rules. Unlike the other Chaos Gods, Khorne values a twisted form of honour:

  • No sorcery. Khorne despises magic in all forms. His followers fight with steel, muscle, and fury. Flesh Hounds exist specifically to hunt psykers. "Khorne cares not from whence the blood flows" — but he cares very much how.
  • No cowardice. Running from battle is the ultimate dishonour. A Khorne follower who retreats will be punished far worse than one who dies fighting.
  • Worthy skulls. Killing the defenceless doesn't honour Khorne (in theory). The greatest offerings are the skulls of mighty champions, monsters, and enemy leaders. In practice, berserkers often lose the distinction.
  • Continuous warfare. There is no "enough" killing. The Blood God demands eternal war. A Khorne champion who rests too long will lose his blessings — or his life.

Khorne vs. Other Gods

RivalWhy Khorne Hates Them
SlaaneshKhorne's greatest enemy. Slaanesh represents everything Khorne despises: weakness, indulgence, vanity. Slaanesh kills for pleasure; Khorne kills because killing is the purpose. They are diametrically opposed.
TzeentchSorcery is anathema. Tzeentch wins through plots and magic — both are cowardly in Khorne's eyes. Let the sorcerer scheme; the axe cares not.
NurgleNurgle is passive, patient, accepting. Khorne respects Nurgle's resilience but despises his passivity. Khorne acts. Nurgle endures. They are reluctant allies when needed.

Khorne in RPGs

In Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, Khorne cults are rare but devastating. Unlike the subtle infiltration of Tzeentch or Slaanesh cults, Khorne worship tends to be explosive — a gladiatorial ring that escalates into ritual murder, a mercenary company that starts taking skulls, a flagellant order that crosses the line from penance to blood worship. When a Khorne cult is discovered, it's usually because the bodies have become impossible to hide.

Khorne FAQ

Is Khorne the strongest Chaos God?

Khorne is consistently described as the most powerful in terms of raw strength, because violence and anger are the most common emotions across all species. However, "strongest" in the Great Game is fluid — Tzeentch's schemes and Nurgle's patience can counter Khorne's brute force.

Why does Khorne hate sorcery?

Sorcery is indirect. It's manipulation rather than action. Khorne values direct confrontation — steel against steel, strength against strength. Magic circumvents that. Additionally, sorcery is the domain of his rival Tzeentch, so opposing it is both philosophical and territorial.

Does Khorne care about good vs. evil?

No. Khorne cares about blood and skulls. A paladin slaying an evil warlord in honourable combat feeds Khorne just as much as a berserker butchering villagers. "Khorne cares not from whence the blood flows, only that it flows." Every battlefield, every war, every act of violence — whether noble or monstrous — empowers him.
