Tiefling names carry the weight of their infernal bloodline — sharp syllables, dark vowels, and a sound that turns heads in any tavern. Whether your tiefling embraces their heritage or rebels against it, their name is the first signal of who they are.

Tiefling Naming Conventions

Tiefling names in D&D draw from three distinct traditions, and understanding them helps you pick the right name for your character's backstory and personality.

The Three Naming Traditions

Roleplay Tips for Tiefling Names

  • Virtue names tell a story — A tiefling named "Fear" might be trying to reclaim the emotion others project onto them. One named "Hope" might be fighting to prove tieflings aren't their bloodline. The name choice is itself a character decision.
  • Pronunciation matters — Infernal names often have emphasis on the second syllable: da-MA-kos, a-KME-nos. Practice saying it with confidence.
  • Some tieflings have multiple names — An infernal name for tiefling communities, a virtue name for close friends, and a human name for passing in human society.
  • Surnames are rare — Most tieflings don't inherit family names. Those who do often have a human surname from an adopted family.
