Fantasy World Building Template (Free)

A fantasy world building template saves you from two common problems: the blank-page paralysis of not knowing where to start, and the scattered-notes chaos of having worldbuilding details everywhere but organized nowhere. This free template is designed specifically for fantasy settings — it covers magic systems, mythical races, divine pantheons, and all the elements unique to fantasy world building that generic templates miss.

How This Template Differs from Generic Templates

Generic worldbuilding templates treat fantasy the same as science fiction, historical fiction, or any other genre. But fantasy has unique requirements:

ElementGeneric TemplateFantasy-Specific Template
Magic"Technology notes"Full magic system framework (source, cost, schools, limitations, societal impact)
Species"Demographics"Multiple sentient species with cultures, abilities, and inter-species relations
Religion"Belief systems"Active gods who grant real power, divine interventions, clergy with abilities
Threats"Antagonists"Monsters, demons, undead, corrupted magic, planar invasions
Geography"Maps and terrain"Enchanted forests, cursed wastelands, floating islands, planar crossings

  • What are the hard limits? What can magic absolutely NOT do?

Filling Out the Template: Best Practices

  1. Start with Parts 1 and 2 — Your world's identity and magic system shape everything else
  2. Don't fill every field immediately. Mark unknowns with [TBD] and return to them
  3. Prioritize what your players or readers will encounter first
  4. Every section should connect to at least two others. If your magic system doesn't affect your politics, one of them is underdeveloped
  5. Review the 100 Worldbuilding Questions to fill gaps you didn't think of
