Worldbuilding Questions: 100 Prompts

The hardest part of worldbuilding isn't creating answers — it's knowing which questions to ask. These 100 worldbuilding questions are organized by category and designed to push your world beyond surface-level details into the kind of depth that makes settings feel alive. Use them as prompts during brainstorming sessions, fill gaps in existing worlds, or work through them systematically when building from scratch.

How to Use These Questions
Don't try to answer all 100 at once. Instead:
- Pick 10 that excite you and answer those first. Enthusiasm produces better worldbuilding than obligation.
- Answer from multiple perspectives. What do the elves think about question 36? What do the humans think? The disagreement is where stories live.
- Let answers generate more questions. If you decide magic costs lifespan, that raises new questions about life expectancy, medical research, and the ethics of magical labor.
- Revisit periodically. Questions you couldn't answer six months ago might have obvious answers now that your world has grown.
