For ten thousand years the Black Templars have been at war without pause. They have no homeworld to return to, no fixed fortress to defend, no season of rest. Their crusades sweep from one warzone to the next in a great fleet of black-hulled ships, driven by a faith in the Emperor so fierce that it borders on the fanatical. They swear vows before battle and keep them to the death. They abhor the witch and suffer not the unclean to live.

The Black Templars are one of the most recognizable Space Marine Chapters, a Second Founding Chapter born from the Imperial Fists Legion and founded by Sigismund, the greatest swordsman of the Horus Heresy. With their black armor, white crosses and knightly tabards, they are the Imperium's crusaders made flesh. This guide covers Sigismund and the Chapter's origins, its crusade organization and vows, its hatred of psykers, the Emperor's Champion, its great heroes from High Marshal Helbrecht to Chaplain Grimaldus, and how the army plays.

Sigismund: Champion of the Emperor

The Black Templars' story begins with Sigismund, First Captain of the Imperial Fists Legion under Rogal Dorn. Sigismund was the finest swordsman of his age and a warrior of unbending conviction. During the Horus Heresy he fought through the Siege of Terra, standing in the defense of the Imperial Palace alongside the Adeptus Custodes and his brother Legions. He fought as the Emperor's Champion, and his duels against the champions of the traitor Legions became legend.

Sigismund emerged from the Heresy changed. He had seen what the betrayal of Horus had done to humanity, and he swore an oath to hunt down the enemies of the Emperor wherever they hid, never pausing until his last breath. When Roboute Guilliman's Codex Astartes broke the Legions into Chapters, the Imperial Fists divided, and Sigismund became the first High Marshal of a new Chapter: the Black Templars.

Sigismund led his warriors not to a homeworld but into an endless crusade. The Black Templars carried his oath with them, and they have never stopped. To this day they remember him as their founder and the model of what a Templar should be. Their brother Chapters from Dorn's line — the Imperial Fists and Crimson Fists among them — share their gene-seed, but none share their zeal.

The Eternal Crusade

The Black Templars are a fleet-based Chapter. Their flagship, the battle barge Eternal Crusader, serves as a mobile fortress-monastery. The Chapter has no single recruiting world. Instead, Black Templars crusades recruit aspirants from the worlds they fight on, choosing the bravest warriors and the most devout.

This structure also explains one of the Chapter's open secrets. Because the Black Templars do not report their numbers and keep recruiting across many crusades at once, the Imperium suspects they are far larger than the thousand warriors the Codex Astartes permits. No one has ever forced them to prove otherwise.

Crusade Organization: Marshals, Sword Brethren and Initiates

The Black Templars ignore the Codex company structure. The Chapter is divided into crusades, each led by a Marshal, and these crusades vary in size depending on the war they fight.

  • The High Marshal commands the entire Chapter and leads the greatest crusade in person.
  • Marshals lead individual crusades, often with a Castellan as a second in command.
  • Sword Brethren are the Chapter's veterans, an elite brotherhood of the finest warriors in each crusade.
  • Initiates are full battle-brothers who form the core of every crusade.
  • Neophytes do not serve in a separate Scout Company as in the Codex. Each is attached to an Initiate who trains him on the battlefield, fighting alongside him in the same squad.
  • Chaplains hold enormous influence. Their faith, sermons and battle-hymns drive the crusade, and the Chapter's spiritual leadership is as respected as its military command.

The Vows and the Faith

Before every battle, the Black Templars take a vow. Their oldest vows include promises to suffer not the unclean to live, to uphold the honor of the Emperor, to abhor the witch and destroy the witch, and to accept any challenge, no matter the odds. These vows are not empty rhetoric. Black Templars will charge into overwhelming numbers, refuse to retreat, and accept challenges that other Chapters would decline as suicidal.

The Black Templars are also unusual among Space Marines in their faith. Most Chapters regard the Emperor as their father and creator, not a god. The Black Templars worship Him as a deity in a manner closer to the Imperial Cult than to the beliefs of their brother Chapters. That makes them natural allies of the Adepta Sororitas, whose faith is equally burning.

Their faith has a sharp edge. The Black Templars hate psykers. They maintain no Librarius, field no Librarians, and treat witches with deep suspicion — including those who serve the Imperium. On the battlefield they rely on faith, discipline and steel to resist sorcery.

The Emperor's Champion

Before a great battle, a single Black Templar may receive a vision from the Emperor. That warrior becomes the Emperor's Champion, donning the Armor of Faith and wielding the Black Sword. He seeks out the enemy's greatest champion and fights him in single combat, carrying the honor of the whole crusade on his blade. The role echoes Sigismund's own title during the Siege of Terra, and it remains one of the most iconic images of the Chapter.

Recruitment and Training on Crusade

Because the Black Templars have no homeworld, recruitment happens wherever a crusade fights. Marshals and Chaplains watch the warriors of the worlds they liberate, choosing those who show courage and devotion. Some aspirants are hardened soldiers; others are fervent believers who have fought for the Emperor with nothing but faith. Once chosen, they receive the gene-seed of Rogal Dorn and begin their transformation into Space Marines.

Training does not happen in a distant fortress. A Neophyte learns at the side of a seasoned Initiate, fighting in the same squad from his first battles onward. He watches, imitates and earns his place under fire, and his mentor is responsible for his progress. When a Neophyte proves himself, he becomes an Initiate in turn — and in time, perhaps, takes on a Neophyte of his own. This system binds Templar squads together with personal bonds of loyalty and gives each crusade a sense of continuity even as its warriors fall.

The crusade culture also explains much of the Black Templars' character. Every warrior lives in constant motion, from one war to the next, surrounded by brothers who share his vows. There are no quiet garrisons in which doubt might grow. For a Templar, the crusade itself is home, and the only worthy end is to die with a vow fulfilled.

Themes: Faith Without Compromise

The Black Templars embody one of Warhammer 40,000's central questions: what does unshakable faith look like in a galaxy this dark? They are heroes who will throw themselves at impossible odds to protect the Imperium, and zealots who will treat a loyal psyker as an enemy. Their crusades bring salvation to some worlds and terror to others. For writers and Game Masters, that tension makes them excellent allies to challenge players with — they are always on humanity's side, but rarely on anyone else's terms.

Heroes of the Black Templars

  • High Marshal Helbrecht leads the Chapter today. A fierce, uncompromising commander, he has led the Templars through the wars for Armageddon and into the crusades of the Dark Imperium, fighting where the Great Rift has left the Imperium most exposed.
  • Chaplain Grimaldus, the Hero of Helsreach, rose to fame during the Third War for Armageddon. Defending the hive city of Helsreach against the Orks alongside the soldiers of the Astra Militarum, he fought a last-ditch defense that made him a legend. He is accompanied by servitors bearing relics of the fallen.
  • The Emperor's Champions of each crusade are heroes in their own right, chosen by vision and remembered in the Chapter's records for the champions they slew.

The Black Templars' crusades have fought against every enemy of the Imperium: xenos empires, rebel worlds, and above all the traitor warbands of the Chaos Space Marines, whom they hate with a particular ferocity for betraying the Emperor. The plague-ridden Death Guard are an especially fitting foe for a Chapter whose first vow is to suffer not the unclean to live.

The Black Templars in the Dark Imperium

The Great Rift has given the Black Templars what they have always sought: an Imperium beset by heretics, daemons and xenos on every side. With the arrival of Roboute Guilliman's Indomitus Crusade, the Chapter received Primaris Space Marines and folded them into its crusades, with Primaris Initiates and Neophytes fighting together just as their firstborn brothers have always done. Crusades now sweep across both Imperium Sanctus and the darkness of Imperium Nihilus, driven by High Marshal Helbrecht's conviction that the Emperor's enemies must be hunted down wherever they appear. How the Black Templars Play on the Tabletop

The Black Templars use the wider Space Marine range plus a set of unique units: Primaris Crusader squads mixing Initiates and Neophytes, Sword Brethren, Castellans, the Emperor's Champion, and characters such as High Marshal Helbrecht and Chaplain Grimaldus. They have no Librarians, so the army is built entirely around faith and steel.

  • Identity: an aggressive close-combat Marine army that wants to advance relentlessly and win the fight in melee.
  • Strengths: excellent melee infantry, resilient crusader squads, strong characters, and a crusading aesthetic that is instantly recognizable.
  • Challenges: no psykers, and a playstyle that rewards closing the distance — an army that hangs back loses its edge.
  • Best for: players who love holy warriors, knightly heraldry, and a straightforward "charge and smite" game plan.

The crusade structure also gives hobbyists room to invent their own Marshal and his crusade, with its own banners and vows. Give your Initiates and Sword Brethren their names with the Space Marine name generator.

Black Templars FAQ

Who founded the Black Templars?

Sigismund, First Captain of the Imperial Fists and the Emperor's Champion during the Siege of Terra. He became the first High Marshal of the Black Templars when the Imperial Fists Legion was divided during the Second Founding.

Are the Black Templars an Imperial Fists successor?

Yes. They carry the gene-seed of Rogal Dorn and were created from the Imperial Fists Legion, which makes them brothers to Chapters such as the Imperial Fists and Crimson Fists. Their culture and organization, however, are entirely their own.

Why don't the Black Templars have Librarians?

The Black Templars abhor psykers. Their faith treats witches as a danger to the soul, so they maintain no Librarius and resist sorcery through faith and discipline instead.

How many Black Templars are there?

Nobody knows. The Chapter does not report its numbers and recruits on campaign across many crusades at once. The Imperium widely suspects they are far larger than the thousand battle-brothers the Codex Astartes allows.

Do the Black Templars worship the Emperor?

Yes. Unlike most Space Marine Chapters, which see the Emperor as their father rather than a god, the Black Templars venerate Him as a deity — a belief closer to the Imperial Cult and to the Adepta Sororitas.

Who is the current leader of the Black Templars?

High Marshal Helbrecht leads the Chapter and its greatest crusade. Chaplain Grimaldus, the Hero of Helsreach, is one of its most famous spiritual leaders.
