Other Legions win wars with fury, faith or cunning. The Iron Warriors win them with arithmetic. They calculate how many shells a wall can absorb, how many lives a breach will cost, and then they pay the price without blinking. Their armor is bare gunmetal slashed with yellow-and-black hazard stripes, their battle cry is "Iron within, iron without," and for ten thousand years they have been the finest siege army in the galaxy.

The IV Legion is one of the original Traitor Legions of the Chaos Space Marines, and its story is a story of resentment. Its Primarch, Perturabo, was a genius who wanted to build and was only ever asked to destroy. He turned traitor out of bitterness, besieged the Emperor's Palace during the Siege of Terra and now rules the daemon world of Medrengard as a Daemon Primarch. In 2026 he set his sons on the greatest siege of all: the conquest of the Imperium itself, one fortress at a time.

Perturabo and Olympia

The infant Perturabo landed on Olympia, a mountainous world of feuding city-states, and was taken in by the tyrant of the city of Lochos. He grew into a polymath: an architect, an engineer, a mathematician and an artist who dreamed of designing great works. He was also a superb general, and he conquered Olympia's other cities for his adoptive house. When the Emperor arrived, Perturabo accepted command of the IV Legion, hoping that the Great Crusade would let him build. Instead it asked him to tear things down.

His first act as commander set the tone. Reviewing his new Legion's record and finding it wanting, Perturabo ordered a decimation: one warrior in every ten, chosen by lot, beaten to death by his own brothers. The Iron Warriors learned that their father judged them by results alone, and they learned to stop expecting praise.

The Rivalry with Rogal Dorn

During the Great Crusade the Iron Warriors were broken up into garrisons and thrown at fortress after fortress in grinding, thankless assaults. Their losses were enormous and their victories rarely celebrated. Worse, Perturabo had to watch his brother Rogal Dorn, Primarch of the Imperial Fists, praised as the master of fortification and entrusted with the defense of Terra itself. Dorn's public boasts that his Legion could hold any fortress against any enemy cut Perturabo deeply. The rivalry between the builder and the breaker became one of the defining feuds of the Heresy.

The final break came from Olympia. When his homeworld rebelled against the Imperium, Perturabo returned and crushed it, killing millions and leaving its cities in ruins. Horus, rather than condemning him, offered forgiveness and praise. Perturabo swore a secret oath to the Warmaster, and the Iron Warriors went with him into treachery.

The Iron Warriors in the Horus Heresy

The Iron Warriors were part of the traitor second wave at the Drop Site Massacre on Isstvan V, landing as supposed reinforcements before turning their guns on the loyalists. From there they fought some of the Heresy's most famous campaigns:

  • Phall: the Iron Warriors ambushed an Imperial Fists fleet, one of the first blows in the long war between Perturabo and Dorn.
  • Tallarn: the Iron Warriors virus-bombed the world of Tallarn, triggering the largest tank battle in the history of the Imperium. The poisoned world later became home to the desert-hardened Tallarn regiments of the Astra Militarum.
  • Hydra Cordatus and the Angel Exterminatus: after reducing the fortress of Hydra Cordatus, Perturabo followed Fulgrim of the Emperor's Children into the Eye of Terror in search of a weapon called the Angel Exterminatus. It was a trick: Fulgrim's real goal was his own ascension to daemonhood.
  • The Siege of Terra: Perturabo was the architect of the assault on the Imperial Palace, finally matching his genius against Dorn's walls. The Iron Warriors led attacks on the Lion's Gate spaceport and other key defenses. Yet in the Siege of Terra novels, Perturabo quits the battle after a quarrel with Horus, leaving before the end.

The Iron Cage and Medrengard

The feud with Dorn did not end with the Heresy. During the Great Scouring, Dorn publicly vowed to drag Perturabo back to Terra in an iron cage. Perturabo answered with a trap. On Sebastus IV he lured the Imperial Fists into a fortress built to kill them, a maze of trenches, minefields and killing grounds, and bled them for weeks. Only the arrival of the Ultramarines drove the Iron Warriors off. Perturabo offered the captured loyalist gene-seed to the Chaos Gods, and in return was raised to daemonhood.

He then claimed Medrengard, a daemon world of black fortresses in the Eye of Terror, as the Legion's new home. There the Daemon Primarch has brooded for ten thousand years, designing, rebuilding and plotting, while his Warsmiths lead their grand companies out to raid and conquer. The Iron Warriors' pragmatism extends to their gods: they serve Chaos Undivided because daemons and daemon engines are useful, not out of worship.

Organization: Warsmiths and Grand Companies

The Iron Warriors are among the more organized Traitor Legions. Their grand companies are commanded by Warsmiths, master siege engineers and warlords who answer, in theory, to Perturabo. Warpsmiths bind daemons into machines and maintain the Legion's war engines, and alliances with the Dark Mechanicum give them access to artillery, daemon engines and forges that other warbands envy.

On the battlefield, the Legion favors heavy-weapon Havocs, Terminators, Obliterators and Mutilators fused with techno-organic weaponry, and the full menagerie of daemon engines: Defilers, Forgefiends and Maulerfiends. Mortal slaves, cultists and press-ganged Guardsmen dig the trenches and absorb the first volleys. Every soldier, mortal or Astartes, is a number in the Warsmith's calculations.

Key Characters of the Iron Warriors

Perturabo, the Lord of Iron

The Daemon Primarch of the IV Legion: brilliant, paranoid, cold to the point of insult, and incapable of admitting he was wrong. For most of the setting's history he stayed out of sight on Medrengard. In March 2026, Games Workshop published what it called the first proper depiction of the post-ascension Perturabo, a towering daemonic war machine of a Primarch.

Warsmith Honsou

The most famous Iron Warrior of Black Library fiction, from Graham McNeill's novels starting with Storm of Iron, the story of the siege of Hydra Cordatus. Honsou is scorned by his brothers as a "half-breed" because he carries Imperial Fists gene-seed, and he claws his way to the rank of Warsmith anyway. His long feud with the Ultramarines captain Uriel Ventris runs through McNeill's Ultramarines series.

Forrix and Kroeger

Two of the Legion's Heresy veterans, who appear both as Perturabo's commanders in Angel Exterminatus and, ten thousand years later, as rival captains of the unnamed Warsmith in Storm of Iron. Forrix is the weary, methodical engineer; Kroeger the brute who thirsts for blood.

Warsmith Kravek Morne

The Iron Warriors' newest champion, revealed in January 2026. Kravek is young by the Legion's standards, inducted only about two thousand years before the Great Rift, and he earned his rank through brutal frontal assaults. He fights in an ancient suit of Cataphractii Terminator armor he calls the Iron Mantle, bristling with mechatendrils, and wields a thunder hammer named Last Argument. Perturabo does not truly respect any of his commanders, but Kravek is among the few who have earned his trust.

Reign of Iron: The Iron Warriors in 2026

In the current setting the Great Rift has given Perturabo his chance to right old wrongs. Iron Warriors invasions have spread across the Imperium, raising vast citadels on conquered worlds. In 2026 Games Workshop's Eye of Terror: Reign of Iron campaign made the Legion the center of the story. Perturabo's plan is the Infinite Citadel: an expanding ring of brutalist fortifications, whole worlds stripped of resources and turned into keeps, creeping step by step toward Terra.

The first objective is the Cadian Gate. Cadia has fallen, but Imperial bastions and forge worlds such as Agripinaa still hold the region, and the Adeptus Mechanicus and its allies stand in the way. Kravek Morne leads the assault. According to the campaign lore, the slaughter of these sieges also thins the veil between realspace and the Warp, so that one day Perturabo himself may walk on Imperial soil again and deliver the final blow in person. The 2026 release wave that accompanied the story included Kravek Morne, a new Iron Warriors upgrade set, new Mutilators and a redesigned Defiler.

How the Iron Warriors Differ from Other Legions

  • Versus the Night Lords: the Night Lords raid and vanish. The Iron Warriors arrive, dig in and stay.
  • Versus the Black Legion: both are organized and ambitious, but the Iron Warriors follow their own Primarch's plan rather than Abaddon's.
  • Versus the Imperial Fists: the two Legions are perfect opposites, the builders of walls and the breakers of walls, and their hatred has lasted ten thousand years.

How the Iron Warriors Play on the Tabletop

Iron Warriors are fielded from the Chaos Space Marines range, and their identity on the table is the most defensive and methodical of the Traitor Legions: heavy firepower, durable infantry, daemon engines and vehicles, and a willingness to hold ground and grind the enemy down. Havocs, Obliterators, Terminators, Forgefiends and Defilers are natural fits, and the army rewards patience and careful positioning more than all-out charges. The 2026 releases gave the Legion a dedicated character and an upgrade set, making it easier than ever to build a distinctive Iron Warriors force.

For painters, the Iron Warriors are a classic starter Legion: metallic armor is quick to paint and weathers beautifully, and the hazard stripes, while famously fiddly, are the one detail that makes the whole army instantly recognizable.

Iron Warriors FAQ

Who is the Primarch of the Iron Warriors?

Perturabo, the Lord of Iron. Raised on Olympia, he led the IV Legion into treachery during the Horus Heresy and was later raised to daemonhood. He now rules the daemon world of Medrengard as a Daemon Primarch.

Why did the Iron Warriors betray the Emperor?

Resentment. They were used as a siege tool throughout the Great Crusade, suffered terrible losses with little recognition, and watched the Imperial Fists receive the honors Perturabo craved. When Olympia rebelled and Perturabo crushed it, Horus offered him forgiveness and respect, and he swore himself to the Warmaster.

What does "Iron within, iron without" mean?

It is the Iron Warriors' battle cry. It expresses their ideal of being unbreakable inside and out: emotionless, unyielding, as hard as the fortresses they build and destroy.

Is Perturabo in Warhammer 40K now?

Yes, in the lore. Perturabo is alive as a Daemon Primarch on Medrengard, and the 2026 Eye of Terror: Reign of Iron campaign revealed his plan to conquer the Imperium with the Infinite Citadel, along with the first official art of his daemonic form.

Who is Warsmith Honsou?

An Iron Warriors Warsmith from Graham McNeill's Black Library novels, beginning with Storm of Iron. He carries Imperial Fists gene-seed, which makes him an outcast among his brothers, and he is the arch-enemy of the Ultramarine Uriel Ventris.

Who is Kravek Morne?

A Warsmith of the Iron Warriors introduced in 2026, the commander of Perturabo's assault on the Cadian Gate in the Eye of Terror: Reign of Iron campaign. He wears Cataphractii Terminator armor called the Iron Mantle and wields the thunder hammer Last Argument.
