Logan Grimnar has ruled the sons of Russ for longer than most human empires last. The Great Wolf is old, scarred, white-bearded and still terrifying in battle, a warrior-king who rides to war on a chariot drawn by giant wolves and who has defied Inquisitors, Daemon Primarchs and even the returned Roboute Guilliman when he felt his Chapter's honor was at stake.

Logan Grimnar is the Great Wolf and Chapter Master of the Space Wolves, the wild warriors of Fenris. This guide goes deeper than the Chapter overview: his youth among the Fenrisian tribes, his rise to Great Wolf, the bitter "Months of Shame" after the First War for Armageddon, his wars against Angron and Magnus, his doubts about the Primaris Marines and Guilliman, and where he stands in the current setting.

Origins: A Warrior of the Iron Blood

Grimnar was born on Fenris into the Iron Blood tribe. As a young warrior he was ambushed with his crew at the ruins of a temple of Morkai, the Fenrisian death-wolf, and soon stood alone among his dead comrades, still swinging a bloody axe. A Wolf Priest named Ulrik had been watching from above. As Logan made his last stand, Space Wolves Terminators descended and carried him to the Fang.

Ulrik, later known as Ulrik the Slayer, became his mentor and kept testing him. According to the Champions of Fenris supplement, Logan's trials included slaying the ice troll Frostblood, which had killed dozens of aspirants, by driving a broken bone into its eye. The Canis Helix took to him as if he had been born for it. He became a Blood Claw in the Great Company of Asvald Stormwrack, and what set him apart was not only his courage but his charisma: his easy grin and ready jokes won over even the oldest and most cynical Long Fangs.

After more than a century of war, Grimnar earned a place in Asvald's Wolf Guard. In the 390s of the 41st millennium he fought in the Macharian Crusade and came to respect Lord Solar Macharius. When Asvald fell, Logan was elected Wolf Lord in his place, and soon afterwards, when the reigning Great Wolf was murdered by a Drukhari succubus, he was chosen to lead the whole Chapter. Sources disagree on his predecessor and on exactly how long he has ruled, giving figures from over five hundred to more than seven hundred years.

Defining Deeds and Campaigns

The First War for Armageddon

Grimnar's first great test came when a Chaos space hulk brought the Daemon Primarch Angron and his World Eaters to Armageddon. The Space Wolves stiffened the Imperial line, but Logan knew they could not defeat a Daemon Primarch alone. When Angron attacked, he played his ace: the Grey Knights, who banished Angron back to the warp at a terrible cost.

The Months of Shame

What came next has shaped Grimnar's attitude to the Imperium ever since. Following standard practice for anyone exposed to Chaos, the Inquisition rounded up Armageddon's survivors into labor camps to be sterilized and left to die. Grimnar refused to accept it and had his fleet escort refugee ships beyond the Inquisition's reach. The standoff escalated into open conflict with the Ordo Malleus and the Grey Knights, including a betrayal at a parley and fighting in the Fenris system itself, during which Grimnar personally killed Inquisitor Lord Kysnaros. Only the counsel of the ancient Dreadnought Bjorn the Fell-Handed persuaded him to stand down. He has never forgiven the Inquisition or the Administratum.

The Thirteenth Black Crusade

When Abaddon launched his Thirteenth Black Crusade, Logan was chosen as supreme commander of the defending Imperial forces in its early stages. At the Battle of Kasr Sonnen, he and Supreme Grand Master Azrael of the Dark Angels put their Chapters' ancient grudge aside and defeated a force many times their size.

War Zone Fenris

The return of the feral Wulfen heralded a crisis on Fenris itself. Magnus the Red, Daemon Primarch of the Thousand Sons and the Space Wolves' oldest enemy, invaded the Fenris system. Grimnar led the reclamation of the moon Midgardia, fought the Nurgle daemons of the Infernal Tetrad and was rescued by the Wolf Lord Egil Iron Wolf before the moon's destruction. In the final battle, thanks to Egil's sacrifice, Grimnar wounded Magnus with the Axe Morkai, giving the Grey Knights time to banish him.

The Wolftime and the Primaris Question

Gav Thorpe's novel The Wolftime, the third book of Black Library's Dawn of Fire series, explores Grimnar's response to the Era Indomitus. The arrival of Primaris Marines for the Space Wolves, warriors grown on Mars rather than chosen on Fenris, left the Old Wolf deeply suspicious. He distrusted Roboute Guilliman as the "Legion-breaker" who had once split the Space Marines and feared he meant to bring the Wolves to heel.

Grimnar also became convinced that his own fate was to die fighting the Ork warlord Ghazghkull Thraka, and at first he sought to meet that fate rather than cooperate with the Primarch. In the end he changed his mind, accepted the Primaris warriors as true sons of Fenris and committed the Chapter to the Indomitus Crusade.

Personality and Relationships

Grimnar is gruff, shrewd and deeply loyal, a leader who rules through respect and force of personality rather than paperwork. He laughs in battle and bristles at any outside interference in his Chapter's affairs, which has led to accusations of heresy against the Space Wolves more than once. Beneath the bluster he is a careful strategist who knows when to call for help, as he did against Angron.

  • Leman Russ, his missing Primarch, is the figure he lives in the shadow of. Many Space Wolves believe Russ will return at the Wolftime, the end of days.
  • Ulrik the Slayer found him on Fenris and remains his oldest mentor.
  • Bjorn the Fell-Handed, the Chapter's ancient Dreadnought, is one of the few voices he will heed against his own anger.
  • Ragnar Blackmane and the other Wolf Lords are as quarrelsome as any Fenrisian jarls, but they follow the Great Wolf.
  • High Marshal Helbrecht of the Black Templars clashed with him during the Season of Blood, when Grimnar feared a repeat of the Months of Shame.
  • The Inquisition and the Dark Angels remain old sources of friction, though he has fought beside both when needed.

Current Status

In the current setting, Logan Grimnar is alive and leading the Space Wolves. After committing to the Indomitus Crusade, he returned to Armageddon during the Season of Blood, when Angron came back at the head of a vast Chaos horde. He led the Champions of Fenris personally, argued constantly with Helbrecht over the fate of Armageddon's civilians, and eventually fought beside the Black Templars in the final assault on the Red Angel's Gate. With Ghazghkull's Waaagh! now engulfing Armageddon again, the prophecy that the Old Wolf will meet his end against the Ork warlord hangs over him still.

Logan Grimnar on the Tabletop

On the tabletop, Logan Grimnar is the Space Wolves' supreme commander: a tough, close-combat leader who makes the Chapter's warriors more aggressive and flexible, either on foot in Terminator armor with his Wolf Guard or riding Stormrider into the heart of the enemy. He is the natural centerpiece of a Space Wolves army built around Wolf Guard, Thunderwolf Cavalry and Fenrisian Wolves.

The Old Wolf has had several miniatures over the years, including the large Stormrider chariot kit. A new Logan Grimnar model was revealed in 2025 as part of the Space Wolves' latest wave of releases.
