Most Space Marines see ordinary humans as the people they were made to defend. The Salamanders see them as the people they come from. Forged on a world of volcanoes and earthquakes, these sons of Vulkan are master smiths, fearsome close-range fighters and, almost alone among the Angels of Death, genuinely compassionate toward the civilians caught in the Imperium's wars.

The Salamanders are one of the First Founding Space Marine Chapters, the heirs of the XVIII Legion. With their green armor, coal-black skin and burning red eyes, they are instantly recognizable, and their mix of fire, faith and kindness makes them one of the most loved Chapters in Warhammer 40,000. This guide covers Vulkan and Nocturne, the Promethean Cult, the Drop Site Massacre, the Chapter's unusual organization, its heroes from Tu'Shan to Vulkan He'stan, the quest for the Tomes of Fire, and how the Salamanders play on the tabletop.

Vulkan and the World of Nocturne

Nocturne is a brutal world. Its surface is covered in volcanoes, ash deserts and lava flows, and its large moon, Prometheus, follows an orbit that periodically tears the planet apart. During the Time of Trial, earthquakes and eruptions shake Nocturne for months, and its people retreat into fortified Sanctuary Cities to survive. Life there is hard, and the Nocturneans are tough, practical people who value skill with tools and loyalty to their community.

The infant Primarch Vulkan was found by a blacksmith named N'bel, who raised him as his son. Vulkan grew into a giant of a man, a master of the forge and a protector of his people. When raiders from the Dark City of Commorragh attacked Nocturne, he united the Sanctuary Cities and drove them off. That ancient grudge still burns: the Salamanders hate the Drukhari with a special fury.

When the Emperor came to Nocturne, legend says he challenged Vulkan to a contest of strength and skill: forging a weapon and hunting the great fire drakes that live in the mountains. At the climax of the contest, the Emperor slipped toward a lava flow, and Vulkan chose to save him rather than win. The Emperor declared that a ruler who would sacrifice victory for another was worthy of his trust. Vulkan bent the knee and took command of the XVIII Legion, which he renamed the Salamanders after the fire drakes of his homeworld.

The Drop Site Massacre and the Lost Primarch

When Horus rebelled, the Salamanders were among the seven Legions sent to crush the first rebels at Isstvan V. The first wave — the Salamanders, the Iron Hands and the Raven Guard — landed to attack. Then the second wave, four Legions supposedly loyal, turned their guns on them. In the Drop Site Massacre, the three loyal Legions were almost annihilated, and Vulkan was lost.

The Black Library's Horus Heresy novels reveal that Vulkan survived. He was captured by Konrad Curze, Primarch of the Night Lords, who tortured him and killed him again and again — for Vulkan, it turns out, was a Perpetual, a being who returns from death. He eventually escaped and made his way to Terra, where his story continues in the Siege of Terra novels.

In the 41st Millennium, Vulkan is gone. Before he disappeared, he left behind the Tomes of Fire, writings full of riddles and prophecy. They describe nine artifacts hidden across the galaxy. The Salamanders believe that when all nine are found, their Primarch will return. The search for them is one of the Chapter's sacred duties.

The Promethean Cult

The Salamanders' beliefs are known as the Promethean Cult, a creed that blends Nocturnean traditions with the teachings of Vulkan. It values three things above all.

  • Self-reliance. A Salamander should be able to make, repair and maintain his own wargear. Many battle-brothers forge their own weapons, and the Chapter's armor and relics are among the finest in the Imperium.
  • Sacrifice. Strength exists to protect others. A Salamander will put himself in harm's way to save a civilian or a fellow soldier, and the Chapter often fights side by side with the Astra Militarum regiments that others treat as expendable.
  • Fire. Fire is a tool of creation and purification. It is no accident that the Chapter favors flamers, meltaguns and other weapons of heat and flame.

Salamanders also mark their deeds with brands burned into their skin, so that a veteran's body becomes a record of his battles. Their skin is coal-black and their eyes glow red, a reaction between Vulkan's gene-seed and the radiation of Nocturne. To frightened Imperial citizens they can look like demons, which makes their gentleness all the more striking.

Organization: Seven Companies and the Firedrakes

The Salamanders follow most of the Codex Astartes, but with important differences. Most notably, the Chapter is organized into seven companies rather than ten, each with deep links to the Sanctuary Cities of Nocturne. The Chapter recruits only from its homeworld, which keeps its ties to the people of Nocturne strong but also keeps its numbers small.

  • The Chapter Master, currently Tu'Shan, holds the title Regent of Prometheus.
  • The Firedrakes are the 1st Company, the Chapter's veterans, often fighting in Terminator armor with thunder hammers and storm shields.
  • The Forgefather is the keeper of Vulkan's legacy and the master of the Chapter's forges, charged with the quest for the lost artifacts.
  • Chaplains and Librarians serve as the spiritual guardians of the Promethean Cult and the Chapter's psychic defenders.

Because Salamanders spend long periods among the people of Nocturne between campaigns, they keep a connection to ordinary humanity that most Space Marines lose. It is a large part of why they are so protective of civilians on the battlefield.

Heroes of the Salamanders

Tu'Shan

Chapter Master and Regent of Prometheus, Tu'Shan leads the Salamanders as a warrior and a guardian of their traditions. He is admired for his courage and for keeping the Chapter true to Vulkan's ideals in a galaxy that rarely rewards kindness.

Vulkan He'stan

The Forgefather of the Salamanders, Vulkan He'stan, has spent his life searching for the nine artifacts of the Tomes of Fire. He carries several of the relics he has already found, including the Spear of Vulkan, the Gauntlet of the Forge and Kesare's Mantle. He travels the galaxy, often far from the Chapter, following the riddles of his Primarch.

Other Notable Salamanders

  • Adrax Agatone, Captain of the 3rd Company, a Primaris hero known for his hatred of the Drukhari and his protective instincts.
  • Bray'arth Ashmantle, an ancient Dreadnought whose fury in battle is said to burn as hot as the forges of Nocturne.
  • Dak'ir and Tsu'gan, the rival battle-brothers at the heart of Nick Kyme's Black Library Tome of Fire trilogy.

Successors and Allies

The Salamanders have few acknowledged successor Chapters, partly because the Chapter itself is small and recruits slowly, and partly because its own losses have been heavy. The Storm Lords are among the best known of Vulkan's descendants. The Salamanders also hold a special bond with the other two Legions that suffered at Isstvan V. They share a respect with the Iron Hands and the Raven Guard that comes from surviving the same betrayal, even though the three Chapters have very different cultures.

How the Salamanders Differ from Other Chapters

  • Humanity first. They protect civilians even at a cost, something the Ultramarines respect and some other Chapters consider a weakness.
  • Craftsmen. Every battle-brother is also a smith, and the Chapter's wargear is famous for its quality.
  • Close and hot. They prefer to fight at short range with flame, melta and hammer.
  • Small and slow to grow. Seven companies and a single recruiting world make every loss painful.
  • A missing Primarch, not a dead one. The search for the Tomes of Fire gives them hope that Vulkan will return.

How the Salamanders Play on the Tabletop

On the tabletop, the Salamanders are a Space Marine army built around close-range firepower and durability. They reward players who bring flamers, meltaguns and thunder hammers right up to the enemy, and who like tough, reliable units that can take a hit and keep fighting. Their style is direct: get close, burn the enemy out of cover and finish the job with heavy melee weapons.

Vulkan He'stan is their signature character, and Adrax Agatone and Bray'arth Ashmantle give the army a strong core of heroes. Terminators fighting as Firedrakes, Primaris units armed with melta weapons and flame-armed vehicles all fit the Chapter's identity. For painters, the deep green armor, black skin and red eyes make a striking and rewarding scheme, and fire-drake scales and molten bases add plenty of room for creativity.

Salamanders FAQ

Who is the Primarch of the Salamanders?

Vulkan, Primarch of the XVIII Legion. Raised by a blacksmith on Nocturne, he led the Legion during the Great Crusade and survived the Drop Site Massacre. He has been missing for thousands of years, and the Salamanders believe he will one day return.

Why do Salamanders have black skin and red eyes?

It is a reaction between Vulkan's gene-seed and the intense radiation of their homeworld, Nocturne. The change happens to every Salamander after he receives his implants.

Why are the Salamanders so kind to humans?

Their Promethean Cult teaches that strength exists to protect others. They also recruit only from Nocturne and live among its people between campaigns, so they never lose touch with ordinary humanity.

How many companies do the Salamanders have?

Seven, rather than the ten described in the Codex Astartes. The Chapter remains small because it recruits from a single world and rebuilds slowly after every loss.

What are the Tomes of Fire?

Writings left by Vulkan that describe nine hidden artifacts. The Salamanders believe their Primarch will return once all nine are recovered, and Forgefather Vulkan He'stan has devoted his life to finding them.

Who are the Firedrakes?

The Firedrakes are the Salamanders' 1st Company, the Chapter's most experienced veterans. They often fight in Terminator armor and serve as the honor guard of the Chapter's leaders.
