Marneus Calgar is the Space Marine commander other Space Marines measure themselves against. For centuries he has led the Ultramarines as Chapter Master and Lord Macragge, fought every major threat the galaxy has produced, and governed the realm of Ultramar between campaigns. When his Primarch returned, Calgar was the first veteran to be remade as a Primaris Marine, and he died on the operating table to prove it could be done.

Calgar is the Chapter Master of the Ultramarines, the most famous of all Space Marine Chapters. This guide goes deeper than the Chapter overview: his surprising origin, the battles recorded in his twenty-eight volumes of deeds, his duel with Abaddon on Vigilus, his role beside Roboute Guilliman, and the Space Marine relief of Armageddon he is directing in the current setting.

Origin: The Boy Who Took a Name

The most surprising part of Calgar's story comes from Marvel's 2020 comic Marneus Calgar, written by Kieron Gillen. In it, the future Chapter Master was born Tacitan, a serf of the noble House Calgar on Nova Thulium and the companion of its young heir, Marneus. The two boys trained together as aspirants, hoping to join the Space Marines, until they discovered that their mentor and fellow students were Khornate cultists. The real Marneus Calgar was killed. Tacitan escaped, swore that his friend's name would live on, and was rescued by the Ultramarines. He has carried that borrowed name ever since. A tomb on Nova Thulium still lists the "true" Marneus Calgar as dying at twelve.

As a neophyte he trained alongside future heroes such as Ortan Cassius, later the Chapter's Master of Sanctity. He rose through the Chapter by doing what Ultramarines do best: fighting by the Codex Astartes, adapting it intelligently, and leading from the front.

Defining Deeds and Campaigns

The Twenty-Eight Volumes

In the Fortress of Hera, the Ultramarines keep records of the deeds of their greatest warriors. Calgar's fill twenty-eight volumes, twice as many as any other living Ultramarine and surpassed only by Guilliman himself. The codexes list highlights such as:

  • Leading the breaching assault on the Tyranid hive ship Behemoth Primus during the Battle of Macragge.
  • Holding a gate alone against an Ork horde for a night and a day at the siege of Zalathras.
  • Defeating an Eldar Avatar in single combat at the Battle for Orar's Sepulchre.
  • Recapturing the star fort Indomitable from the daemonic hordes of M'kar the Reborn.
  • Surviving a Night Lords ambush and rallying the feudal world of Barathred to destroy the traitors.
  • Slaying the Swarmlord at the Battle of Ichar IV.

Macragge and the Tyranids

The defining battle of Calgar's early command was the defense of Macragge against Hive Fleet Behemoth, the first great Tyranid invasion of the Imperium. The Ultramarines held, but the 1st Company died to the last man in the northern polar fortresses, and Calgar himself was gravely wounded. His later victory over Hive Fleet Kraken at Ichar IV, where he killed the Swarmlord, completed a rivalry with the Tyranid hive fleets that has defined his career.

The Second Battle of Damnos

In 999.M41, the High Lords ordered the Ultramarines back to Damnos, a world they had lost to an awakening Necron dynasty. Calgar mustered five companies and the planet's refugees, hid his fleet behind a radioactive asteroid belt and fooled the Necron defenses with empty drop pods. When he realized the Necrons had studied the Ultramarines' doctrine, he did something unexpected: using the Gauntlets of Ultramar, he physically wrenched a gauss pylon around and turned it on the floating Necron citadel, breaking its shield. Captain Cato Sicarius finished off the freed C'tan shard, and the world was retaken in five days.

The Return of the Primarch

When Archmagos Belisarius Cawl arrived on Macragge with a plan to revive Roboute Guilliman, Calgar initially refused, not least because Aeldari were part of the expedition. The Black Legion's assault on Macragge and the counsel of his Chief Librarian Varro Tigurius changed his mind. Calgar fought beside Saint Celestine to hold off the traitors long enough for the Primarch to be reborn. Guilliman then left for Terra and charged Calgar with securing the rest of Ultramar.

Crossing the Rubicon Primaris

Every Chapter wanted to know whether a veteran Space Marine could be transformed into a Primaris Marine. Cawl's own data predicted that most early attempts would fail. Calgar volunteered to go first. The procedure opened him from crown to heel and implanted the three new Primaris organs. His heart stopped and he lay dead for long minutes before the surgeons brought him back, roaring and breaking his restraints. The Ultramarines had their answer, and the Rubicon Primaris became a path for veterans across the Imperium.

Vigilus and the Duel with Abaddon

During the War of Beasts on Vigilus, Guilliman appointed Calgar supreme commander of all Imperial forces on the planet, ruling through a war council called the Vigilus Senate. Facing the Black Legion, Calgar made a secret pact with the Aeldari of Craftworld Saim-Hann and then goaded Abaddon the Despoiler into a duel at Saint's Haven, while an Aeldari ship rammed Abaddon's flagship, the Vengeful Spirit. The ploy forced the Warmaster to retreat, but Calgar was nearly killed: his hearts were pierced, his throat torn open and his arms ruined. He survived, but his rebuilt throat now gives him a mechanical voice.

The Plague Wars and Beyond

When Mortarion's Death Guard invaded Ultramar in the Plague Wars, Guilliman recalled Calgar, who crushed mutinies on Macragge and was placed at the head of the restored Tetrarchy, the council that governs Ultramar. The video game Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 shows him in the Fourth Tyrannic War, authorizing Demetrian Titus's own crossing of the Rubicon and fighting beside him on Demerium.

Personality and Relationships

Calgar is the ideal of the Ultramarines made flesh: calm, rational, fearless and humane. He is famous for never taking cover unless he decides it is tactically sound. He is also a statesman, comfortable in a senate as on a battlefield, and willing to make uncomfortable alliances, even with xenos, when the mission demands it.

  • Roboute Guilliman is his gene-father and commander. Serving a living Primarch has changed Calgar's role from ruler of Ultramar to the Primarch's most trusted lieutenant.
  • Varro Tigurius, the Chief Librarian, is his closest adviser and an old friend.
  • Cato Sicarius is his brilliant, ambitious captain and likely successor.
  • Abaddon the Despoiler nearly killed him on Vigilus; few Space Marines have survived a duel with the Warmaster.
  • The Minotaurs, enforcers of the High Lords, are said to have openly insulted him, a sign of how much the Ultramarines' prominence is resented.

Current Status: Operation Imperator

In the current setting, Calgar is alive and back in the field. When Armageddon's calls for help reached him during the Fourth War for Armageddon, he concluded that only Space Marines could break the Ork siege. He called a muster at Voss Prime that drew elements of more than a dozen Chapters and launched Operation Imperator, appointing commanders such as Tu'shan of the Salamanders and Faradis Anto of the Crimson Fists, with an Ultramarines lieutenant acting as his proxy. It puts him on the same battlefield as Commissar Yarrick and Ghazghkull Thraka.

Marneus Calgar on the Tabletop

On the tabletop, Calgar is the classic Space Marine commander: a powerful melee fighter with his gauntlets and a leader who makes the Ultramarines around him more flexible and efficient. He usually fights with his Victrix Honour Guard at his side, forming a hard-hitting command group at the center of a Codex-style army.

His current miniature shows him as a Primaris Marine with two Victrix Honour Guard, released in 2019. Collectors still remember his older models in Terminator armor, which reflected his pre-Rubicon days in the Armour of Antilochus.
