Commissar Sebastian Yarrick is the Imperium's favorite old soldier: a one-armed, one-eyed political officer who was about to retire when the Orks landed on Armageddon, and who has been fighting them ever since. He holds a power klaw torn from a dead warboss, a bionic eye the greenskins believe can kill with a glance, and the grudging respect of the most dangerous Ork in the galaxy.

Yarrick is the most famous commissar of the Astra Militarum, the "Old Man of Armageddon" whose rivalry with Ghazghkull Thraka spans three wars and more than half a century. This guide covers his origins, the defense of Hades Hive, his capture at Golgotha, the Third War for Armageddon, his rumored death and his return to lead the Fourth War in 2026.

Origins: The Boy Who Hunted Orks

According to the short story Survivor, Yarrick was born Sebastian Vaarden on the world of Taos III and raised by his grandfather, a veteran Imperial Guard sergeant named Yarrick. When Orks invaded, the old man was killed. The boy survived alone in the forests for three years, setting traps for greenskins, and when Imperial forces finally found him he had taken his grandfather's name.

He was taken into the Schola Progenium, trained first for the Militarum Tempestus and then became a commissar. David Annandale's Black Library novel Yarrick: Imperial Creed follows his early career alongside his fellow cadet Dominic Seroff. Along the way he learned the Ork language from a captured raider and made a lifelong study of how Orks think. By 941.M41 he was an old man with a dozen campaigns behind him, assigned to Armageddon and due to retire on the very day the invasion began.

The Second War for Armageddon

When Ghazghkull's space hulk arrived, Yarrick recognized at once that this warlord was smarter and more determined than any Ork he had faced. He had the astropaths call for help. Armageddon's governor, Herman von Strab, insisted the planet could handle the threat alone and exiled Yarrick to Hades Hive for going over his head. Von Strab's incompetence lost most of the planet.

Hades Hive did not fall. Yarrick turned its defenders into fanatics; according to the codex, not a single soldier was executed for cowardice during the siege. When Ghazghkull sent his warboss Ugulhard to finish him, the commissar met the Ork in person. Ugulhard's power klaw severed Yarrick's right arm, but Yarrick took the warboss's head with his chainsword, tore the klaw from the corpse and held it aloft, routing the Orks. He later had that same klaw fitted to his stump. Around the same time he lost an eye and replaced it with a bionic that can fire a short-range las beam. The Orks call it his evil eye, and he encourages their fear of it.

The siege became a personal duel between Yarrick and Ghazghkull. Yarrick was nearly killed in combat with the warlord himself before the last defenders were evacuated. The war ended when Space Marines under Commander Dante drove the Orks off Armageddon, but Hades Hive was recognized as the turning point, and Yarrick was hailed as the Saviour of Armageddon.

Golgotha: Captured and Released

Three years later Yarrick came out of retirement for good, determined to hunt Ghazghkull down. His expedition to the world of Golgotha ended in disaster. The Orks smashed the Imperial army, Yarrick's Baneblade Fortress of Arrogance was abandoned in the wastes, and the commissar himself was captured. After torture and forced labor, and a failed slave revolt aboard Ghazghkull's space hulk, he was brought before the warlord. Ghazghkull handed him a shuttle and let him go: good enemies were hard to find, and the next invasion of Armageddon would be more fun with Yarrick in charge of the defense. The episode is the subject of Annandale's novel Yarrick: Chains of Golgotha.

Yarrick later returned to Golgotha at the head of an Adeptus Mechanicus army with Titans and an Ordinatus engine, though the Orks eventually took the world back.

The Third War for Armageddon

In 998.M41, Ghazghkull returned. Yarrick had arrived two weeks earlier and was voted supreme commander of all Imperial forces on the planet. He had the Fortress of Arrogance recovered from Golgotha and restored as his command tank. When Ghazghkull opened the war by destroying Hades Hive from orbit, it was empty; Yarrick had foreseen the move and evacuated it, choosing cold logic over sentiment. He threw every aircraft he had at the Ork landings and personally led Cadian troops against the Ork rok-fortresses. The war bogged down into a vast stalemate fought by Steel Legion, Cadians, the Death Korps of Krieg and many Space Marine Chapters.

When Ghazghkull left the planet, Yarrick asked High Marshal Helbrecht of the Black Templars to let him join the pursuit. They cornered the warlord at the Battle of the Haunted Gulf, only to watch his flagship escape into the warp. Yarrick knew what that meant for the galaxy.

Rumored Death and Return

For years Yarrick chased Ghazghkull from sector to sector. He finally found him on Icaria, where the Orks were testing a giant teleporter. Yarrick wounded his old enemy, but Ghazghkull lifted him in his klaw, headbutted him unconscious and, instead of crushing his skull, grinned and walked away. A Wolf Priest of the Space Wolves carried him off the dying world.

The Imperium believed he was dead. Bells were rung on Terra, relics said to be his bones circulated across the Imperium, and rumors claimed he had become a saint or joined the High Lords. In truth he survived aboard the Space Wolves strike cruiser Ice Troll, though how is unclear: his Rune Priest allies will not speak plainly about what they did. He emerged with a new cybernetic armature, pale but more vigorous than before, and a nagging sense that his body is not quite his own.

The Fourth War for Armageddon

The 2026 expansion Armageddon: The Return of Yarrick puts the commissar back where he belongs. Learning that Armageddon was under attack by the speedboss Wazdakka Gutsmek on Ghazghkull's orders, Yarrick returned after months in warp transit and stopped an Imperial rout. He led a bloody armored convoy to Hive Death Mire and used his relic servo-skull, the Pharus Horrifica, to send a call for help to the wider Imperium.

When Ghazghkull saw the Fortress of Arrogance leading the column, he knew his best enemy was alive and destroyed the tank with an orbital strike. Yarrick had expected that too. The Baneblade was a decoy; the commissar had been riding in a humbler vehicle, and he reappeared inside Hive Death Mire. Elsewhere, Marneus Calgar is assembling a Space Marine task force to break the siege. The Fourth War for Armageddon is ongoing.

Personality and Relationships

Yarrick is stern, cunning and utterly loyal to the Emperor, but he is not the stereotypical commissar who shoots first. His legend rests on inspiration rather than terror. He is also a student of his enemy: he speaks Ork, plays on their superstitions and understands that Orks respect only strength.

  • Ghazghkull Thraka is his nemesis and, in a twisted way, his mirror. Each is the only opponent the other considers worthy, and both seem to need the other.
  • The Space Wolves saved his life after Icaria and brought him back to Armageddon.
  • High Marshal Helbrecht of the Black Templars shared his hunt for Ghazghkull and may be the source of the Pharus Horrifica.
  • Armageddon's people see him as a living saint, a status he neither asked for nor accepts.

Even the Necron collector Trazyn the Infinite is said to hold Steel Legion troops who fought under Yarrick at Hades Hive among his exhibits.

Yarrick on the Tabletop

On the tabletop, Yarrick is an Astra Militarum leader built around defiance: hard to kill, inspiring to the troops around him and especially dangerous to Orks. He fits armies that hold the line with Infantry Squads, tanks and artillery, and he is the obvious choice for anyone collecting a Steel Legion or Armageddon-themed force.

His newest miniature was released in May 2026 alongside the Armageddon expansion, replacing models from 1992 and 2000 that collectors still love. He also appears in video games such as Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon and in Old Bale Eye, an episode of the animated anthology Hammer and Bolter.

Commissar Yarrick FAQ

Is Commissar Yarrick dead?

No. After Ghazghkull defeated him on Icaria, the Imperium believed he had died, but the Space Wolves saved him. He returned to lead the defense in the Fourth War for Armageddon in 2026.

How did Yarrick lose his arm?

The Ork warboss Ugulhard cut it off with a power klaw during the siege of Hades Hive. Yarrick killed him, took the klaw and later had it fitted in place of his arm.

Why does Ghazghkull keep sparing Yarrick?

Ghazghkull respects him as the only human who truly knows how to fight. He released Yarrick after capturing him on Golgotha and spared him again on Icaria, because the war is more fun with him in it.

What is Yarrick's Bale Eye?

A bionic replacement for the eye he lost on Armageddon. It can fire a short-range las beam. Yarrick had it fitted after hearing Ork rumors that he could kill with a glance.

What books feature Commissar Yarrick?

David Annandale's Yarrick novels, including Imperial Creed, Chains of Golgotha and The Pyres of Armageddon, cover his career, and he appears in Aaron Dembski-Bowden's Helsreach during the Third War for Armageddon.
